8 May 2023 at approximately 1509 hrs. Deputy Schwendeman responded to Ingram Road, Newport Township, to a report that James D. Rhodes, brandished a sawed-off shotgun at occupants of a residence.  Deputies met with Rhodes who denied any such allegations. A search was done at the residence by Marietta Municipal Court Probation Department.  Located was a safe in Rhodes’ bedroom, which he furnished the key for.  Inside the safe was a loaded single-shot 12 gauge shotgun with a pistol grip. The barrel appeared to have been sawn off. The overall length of the barrel was approximately 13”.  The call was closed as unfounded, however Rhodes is under disability to possess a firearm, as he was convicted of a felony drug offense in Washington County Common Pleas Court in January, 2023.  James Dennis Rhodes, age 47, 519 Ingram Road, Newport, OH,  was placed under arrest and charged with having weapons while under disability and unlawful possession of dangerous ordinance.  Rhodes was transported to the Washington County Jail.

9 May 2023 Sgt. Stillson, while patrolling the State Route 7, Newport Township area, approximately the 33-mile marker, observed a grey Kia Soul travelling at 65 miles per hour in a posted 55 miles per hour zone.  This speed was confirmed by radar.  A traffic stop was conducted with the driver, Patricia Hummel, who was found to not have a driver’s license.  A warning was issued to Hummel for the speed and she was issued a citation for driving without a driver’s license.

9 May 2023 Deputy Thornberry responded to Eramet, Warren Township, to conduct a report of tools missing from a contractor’s vehicle.  The stolen goods were valued at over $2000.

9 May 2023 at approximately 1832 hours Sgt. Stillson was waiting at the traffic-controlled intersection of Pike Street and Greene Street, Pioneer Township, when he observed a Ford Explorer travelling north on Pike Street enter the intersection while their traffic control was red and proceeded to make a left turn to travel west onto Greene Street, then onto 7th Street.  A traffic stop was initiated on the driver, Erin C. Stewart.  Stewart knew she ran the stop light.  A citation was issued to Stewart, 1175 Cole Coffman Road, Marietta, OH, for disobeying a traffic control device.

11 May 2023 Deputy Norris met with a victim of fraud in reference to a subject stating that he was with Publisher’s Clearinghouse. 

There are currently 27 women and 92 men being housed in the Washington County Jail.
