National Police Week 2018

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 15 is National Police Week. In Washington D.C., a Memorial Service has been held every year since 1982 at Senate Park. In Washington County, Ohio, Peace Officers gathered at Marietta’s City Hall and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Division to honor the fallen law enforcement officers. Marietta’s City Hall and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office both have memorials.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard presented the Colors and placed wreaths on the memorials in remembrance of the fallen Washington County law enforcement officers.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office also placed grave markers on three former sheriffs’ graves, located at the Putnam Cemetery in Devola: Sheriff Richard Ellis, Sheriff Dean Ellis, and Sheriff George Barker.
